Every now and then she'd wander Way out past the fences, way out in the pasture To where that little creek disappears down beneath the earth And she would wonder “where’s it going?” And on the days he noticed, he would follow Oh, but never all that far No, in the shelter of the buildings He’d watch the wind blow through her dresses and he would wonder, “Where’s it going?” CHORUS: The world goes whirlng, It goes spinning and twirling things get a little dizzy now and then And we spend the time with questions while answers pass us by On the way back from where they've been going There you sit again, across the room Flipping through the pages of another story But hey hey hey its no mystery to me I know you're wondering "where its going?" Cause it's every now and then my mind wanders And there I am again out across the lake I've cut the engine and dropped the oars, I'm just drifting And I'm wondering "where its going?" CHORUS There are days when I am haunted by the sunrise Moved to trace the day across the sky Then standing in the glow and splendor of its setting I'm left to wonder "where it is going?" When that unexpected taste of home awakes you Where do you go? where are you taken? Do you stop to trace the path of a bird across the sky And do you wonder “where it is going?”

The cruel intoxication of the spring time Cut furrows through his senses, sank roots down in his mind And he laid it down for one more time just spinning round the sun One more year, just hanging on But, I'd grown as tired as I'd ever be Spent all my hope just trying to pull some poetry From the bleached bone of stubble of February fields Yeah, I was a stranger in this land
And they say never marry a farmer, cause he's always in the dirt No go and find a gambling man with his clean white linen shirt Find your self an engineer, cause he's always in on time Go and find a tailor man, he'll dress you up so fine
At the first sign of May the rain came down in droves It flooded out the ditches and covered up the roads And he fought his ambitions, for he knew it’d leave him stuck Still he knew much better than to curse this kind of luck ‘Cause it was not too long before the rain had turned its back And all my thoughts would grow dusty and cracked And the only signs of moisture were the tears in my eyes As I stood and cursed the clouds way up on high Yeah, they say never marry a farmer, cause he's always in the dirt Go and marry a gambling man with his clean white linen shirt Find your self an engineer, cause he's always there on time Go and marry a tailor man, he'll dress you up so fine
Well, I swear this place must share something With the delta or the desert ‘cause the horizon overwhelms me And I’ve found beauty in the details Like how the gold and green blew beautiful against the blue and the grey As he stood out in the field and watched the storm clouds roll away And he thought to him self, oh I know he did those days "This must be the way we will know we are blessed" Yeah, I married a farmer, whose always in the dirt You can have your gambling men with their clean white linen shirts You can have an engineer, if you need to be on time Go and find a tailor man if you need to dress so fine
Now, I first came here as a stranger and I’ll probably leave one day the same But I know there is beauty and their is wisdom Yes, there is age in the seasons of the plains So, I will stand as the wind creates currents in the grasses I will stand as the wild geese return to the reeds I will stand, I will stand and I will breath I will stand and I will breath in the sky

The sun comes up over silos and shelter belts Then it makes it’s way on down to the cafe The world can wait ‘till he's caught up on the latest And covered all the topics of the day Shirley pours his coffee and reminds him that good fiends are hard to find But, he looks around the place and thinks “yeah, that’s left around this town”
Now, the ones that you have known since the day that you were born again Talk about how the world has gone to hell And someone suggests "hey it’s probably for the best if a person just packed up all they owned and moved along" But, this world’s an ageing parent that you couldn't bear to put in any home So, you dream on it a while but you'll be back this way before too long

Now, pirates don't get those patches from fighting drunken battles Or hanging out too long with a cut throat crowd No, it's from staring at the sky too long trying to navigate their way back home Or figure out just where in the world they are Just like those drunken buccaneers we've been staring up for far to long When we finally hit the promised land we're going to be to blind to see were home

Yeah, the sun goes down and you finish off a bottle Then watch the stars shake loose from the sky Sometimes they swim around like a million little bluegill Sometimes they dive like a swarm of fiery bees Then comes that final moment that no one here has ever remembered When dreams replace your visions and prepare you the day

Keep It Hot 04:21
Keep it Hot 3 in the morning 2 of us are wondering how 1 day all of this might change A long, long time ago Before you were born there were Sea's that covered up this land And the dinosaurs went stepping out They use to shake and rattle their bones They’d dance all day until the sun went down And the world just got too damn cold So you better keep it hot, keep it hot, keep it hot tonight! Now its one step forward and three to the right and lately I'm too tired to fight But I could dance until the evening sun goes down Yeah, its one step up and you fall on your face But, that's ok I've never put much stock in grace So just hold my hand and we'll make it through just fine Yeah the dinosaurs used to go stepping out They’d shake and rattle their bones They’d dance all day until the sun went down And the world just got too damn cold So you better keep it hot, keep it hot, keep it hot tonight! You can take a great leap forward, but who knows where you'll land If you never look back, you'll never understand It's knowledge, It's just justice without compassion So, it's one step forward and two steps lost and when you stop to measure out the costs You're bound to find your still so far behind But, the dinosaurs they went stepping out They use to shake and rattle their bones They’d dance all day until the sun went down And the world just got too damn cold So you better keep it hot, keep it hot, keep it hot tonight! Yeah, I’ve been marking hope on a beach in the changing tide When maybe the victory is just to stay alive or to dance in the warm sunlight I'm either one step early or three steps late I don't know how much more I can take I need to sing before I forget the song Yeah, the dinosaurs went stepping out They use to shake and rattle their bones They’d dance all day until the sun went down And the world just got too damn cold So you better keep it hot, keep it hot, keep it hot tonight! Yeah, it's 3 in the morning and now the 2 of us are wondering if 1 day all of this might change

When I was young, well I was fit as a fiddle But, lately I've been getting kind of round in the middle My knees get achy and my back gets weak But, honey all of this is yours to keep Well, this old body's just skin and bone But, it's the only thing I'e ever called home I carry it with me and it carries me through So, come on honey I want to make a little home with you Oh, I know all the trouble you've known But, I believe this heart has found a home Now, I aint no doctor, I aint got no cure For all those things that cause you to worry But, when you've got a fever I will bring you cool water And, we can make a little home just where ever you wanna Could be down in the canyon or out in the woods Just any old place you think is good We'll build us a cabin, hell we'll rent us a flat We'll be at home just where we're at I know we both get that ramblin itch So, we'll get a truck with a trailer hitch We'll keep it gassed up and ready to go And, we'll be right at home rollin down the road Yeah, this old body's just skin and bone But, it's the only thing I've ever called home I carry it with me and it carries me through Come on honey I want to make a little home with you

What If? 03:01
So, what are we doing now? Double checking all accounts Both withdrawn and seeing in the red? What if we'd never met? You'd probably still smoke cigarettes, Keep a list of all your regrets, and I'd probably wish I was one. What if, oh never mind I'll save it for another time When answers aren't so close at hand and questions are just that.

Now, I know we both agreed it was best And I don't think I mean to suggest, But, do you think you could hold me one more time? What if it were spring again? Front porch with a storm rolling in Would we let all these things out cry the rain? What if, no I better not ask I guess it's just to great a task And we've both got enough work to do on our own

Now, I was out walking late last night, They stopped and said "hey, are you alright?" “never better” I told them, “never knew her” I thought Maybe the best we can do Is conversations at a quarter past two Pockets of nothing and open spaces of love But, what if? No, forget about that You really don't need to react I don’t mean to suggest things I don't understand

Hints 05:05
Over coffee and news of divorces and babies she laid out her life for us all to behold. Yeah, she’d insinuate herself into distant relations with desperate parties as we watched her grow old, but she knew that her hints were just taken as small talk. You know, that harmless chatter forgiven by all, ‘cause "we're all a bit crazy" they'd joke round the office and she would agree, knowing all of the while that the truths told in jest and tales out of context were the crumbs of her memories laid in the forest for that one day, someday when she’d be returning, finally going back home.
Now behind the desk sat a long ago actress who'd once graced stages from New York to Rome. Yes, behind those eyes so carefully disguised was the mind of an artist like the world’s never known. But, she'd grown disillusioned and well, what with the children, it really was for the best that she'd came back home. The plan was return when her life was in order, but it'd just never happened. Oh, where did the time go? Yeah, the truths told in jest and tales out of context were the crumbs of her memories laid in the forest for that one day, someday when she’d be returning, finally going back home. Filling memos with the words of lesser known prophets, she amused herself at the world's ignorance. Yeah, just like with a drug she found these little thrills as the silence slowly closed in for the kill. Now, memories and dreams blend like smoke into air and sometimes it’s hard to say which is more true when in every breath there’s the hints what once was and a little something that just won’t leave the room. Yeah, the truths told in jest and tales out of context are the crumbs of my memories laid in the forest for that one day, someday when I’ll be returning, finally going back home.

Well, it's been a long time since I've felt young I don’t know where these feelings are coming from It's just there're too many ghosts and grumpy old saints They’re keeping me up at night lining out their complaints While the devil and temptation are nowhere to be found No, they've gone down to the station and hopped the last train out of town
Well, it's been years since I've had anything to say I’ve just got a mouth full of worries come the end of the day Cause there's been nothing but blues skies since the clouds have blown away and the mysteries I once stood for all went and took a great big leap of faith. Yeah, they paid off their debts to the ones that they had owed Sold what was left and now there standing by the side of the road
Oh, it's been too long since I've laid down and cried These dried up rivers must have muddied my eyes ‘Cause I just never even noticed as my sorrow slipped away Yeah, it just stepped out into the night to become another a memory But, now the echoes of laughter ring like banshees before dawn And, I'm left wondering if my soul's already gone Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever felt like this Yeah, mine are steady careful hand's not knocked up crazy fists And, I've tempered my impatient tongue, assured my nervous heart I've even kicked out all the drunken dreams that used to gather round in my back yard Yeah, I don’t know where these feelings are coming from But, it’s been a long time since I've felt young

There’s a whole lot of things I ought to do. I’ve got to fix the fences and the windows too The roof is leaking and that mouse came back Well, I don’t know what to do about that No, I’ve just been acting like a dog gone fool Wasting my nights away….and howling at a new moon. Yeah, it’s up in the morning about a quarter ‘til eight Oh no, I better hurry cause I can’t be late Yeah, every Don Quixote has his day And man, you ought to see the monsters I plan to slay Yeah, I’ve been up again like a dog gone fool Wasting my nights away…am I just howling at a new moon? Well, its coffee in the morning and tea at night I swear that woman really treats me right And I know she loves me ‘cause she told me so Still, I get this crazy itchin’ down in my soul That leaves me acting like a dog gone fool Wasting my nights away…howling at some new moon. Yeah, I’ve got a chicken in my pot and my ducks in a row And a feeling in side that’s saying “Go, man Go!” Down to the corner, out to the lake Well, I’m not stopping ‘till this whole world is shakin’ And I’m up there acting like a dog gone fool Wasting the night away…am just a howlin’ at a new moon?

Well, if it all was just that easy I would be there now Collecting the stories of your history Speaking for the ones who left no words Off alone in my own little midnight train of thought Yes, I would be there now Face to face with all those homeless ambitions Listening for the ones who came before Find a focus for your heart to fix upon My home has moved much more than I care to recall And old folks are the only ones I know looking for a new day While, remembering the ones that came before them He married her because she asked him to Or I would be there now Hush my children your father's going to be back soon He never was the kind to stay out long And these walls will talk about a quiet, quiet home Oh, and I would be there now But, face to face we fight our homeless ambitions And go looking for the ones who came before Find a focus for your heart to fix upon My home has moved much more than I care to recall And old folks are the only ones I’ve found looking for a new day While, remembering the ones that came before them Across the boarder there lies a promised land So, I'll be going now Going to find a new tongue, I’ll find a whole new language New words will be my world ‘Cause it’s easier to be a stranger when you're far away from home So I'll be going now Free at last to find my homeless ambitions And go looking for the one's who came before

Many are the troubles, many are the trials Many are the things that bring us down Many are the times you just fall to your knees and pray that you could leave it all But, child don't lay your burdens down ‘Till the day you are buried down under the ground ‘Till you're prepared to be as light as the air and have nothing holding you at all All that you must do, you will have done Between the rising and the setting of the sun So, waste no time in worry, go take your rest, there just aint no other way And, all that you must know, you will have learned By the time the last green leaf has turned Waste no time in worry, go take your rest, there just aint no other way Now, can you lay it out straight? Do you know how it sounds? Can you walk down the street naked and unbound? Do you have the strength and the courage to believe that one day your burdens will be gone? Yes, child don't lay your burdens down ‘Till the day you are buried down under the ground ‘Till you're prepared to be as light as the air and have nothing holding you at all Yes, child don't lay your burdens down ‘Till the day you are buried down under the ground ‘Till you're prepared to be as light as the air and have nothing holding you at all

about

Lay it Out Straight was recorded in Spring of 2001 over one long weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee with my old friend Greg Horne. I had originally set out to get a few decent recordings to use for getting gigs, but one thing led to another, the stars aligned, the coffee flowed and well, we had an album. We also had a really good time.

I was living in South Dakota at the time and that is where many of these songs are set. I moved to Vermont a few months after this album was recorded and never really “released” or promoted it much. In fact, for several years I did not perform much at all. So, I am pleased to be able to present it for download and to say that recently many of these songs have been taking on a new life and showing up on set lists like welcome old friends.
